SC Gjøa Youth Soccer is pleased to announce that once again our youngest Travel Soccer teams are now tuition-free for Girls born 2014 and 2013 (U7 & U8) and Boys born 2014 (U7).

Players will be selected via tryouts held this summer. You can view our tryout schedule via our Travel Soccer page.

These teams will train once a week in the fall, winter, and spring and will play in numerous 4v4 scrimmages throughout the year. They will be coached by highly qualified and full time professionals who will remain with the team throughout the full soccer year.

The program will focus on fun and creating a love for the game, while teaching fundamental technical skills to prepare them for playing in a competitive league at U9.

FAQ:

Why free/discounted?
Because our U7/U8 players participate in scrimmages against other clubs instead of league games. Like US Soccer, we believe this to be the best way to develop 6 and 7-year olds. As a non-profit, we can put values ahead of income and focus solely on the development of young soccer players.

Why 4v4 Scrimmages?
US Soccer has implemented many player development initiatives in recent years, including rules that U7 and U8 teams play in 4v4 scrimmages instead of competitive league games. This allows our youngest players to grow in an environment where they get lots of touches on the ball, and where the emphasis is more on learning and less on winning. Some clubs (usually for-profit) continue to place 6 and 7 year-olds in competitive leagues, but we’ve been fully committed to this approach for our youngest players since 2014, and in observing the technical skills of our current U13 team we can see the positive results.

What’s the cost and commitment?
For soccer year 2020/21, our U7 (birth year 2014) program will be free for selected girls and boys, and our U8 (2013) program will be free for the girls team. These teams will train once a week in the fall, winter, and spring and will play in numerous 4v4 scrimmages throughout the year with other NYC clubs that follow a similar philosophy. We will focus on fun and creating a love for the game while teaching fundamental technical skills to prepare them for playing in a competitive league at U9.

Who’s the Coach?
Our club will assign highly qualified and professional full time coaches to each team, who will remain with the team throughout the full soccer year. Overseeing the U7 and U8 programs will be our USSF A and UEFA B licensed Director of Youth Soccer, Lee Kellett. Placing our most qualified and experienced coaches on this program shows how highly we regard the importance of teaching the fundamentals of the game at the youngest ages.

What’s the difference between this program and YDP?
To be part of our travel program players must be evaluated and selected from a tryout process, whereas YDP is open to all players. Travel soccer also plays games on the weekends, at this age they play 4v4.

What about U8 Boys (born 2013)?
Any boys born in 2013 can tryout by emailing lee@gjoa.org This program is not free, however the team practices twice a week during the fall and spring.
